Letter from the President

I am grateful to the Sphinx Board members who have worked so hard this year on these newsletters, the mentoring program, and the newly-created Paul Miller Award. Congratulations to the outgoing undergrad officers – Anita Saggurti (Chief), Carlos Rodriguez (Pharisee), and Roni  Mathew (Scribe) and to the incoming officers Adrienne Edwards (Chief), Dan Gutnayer (Pharisee), and Dana Tom (Scribe). We have a number of initiatives in the pipeline and look forward to seeing you on May 12 or hearing from you.

Merrie Frankel, President, Board of Governors, merrie.frankel@moodys.com.

1) Alumni Weekend Champagne Brunch and DP ad

The current Sphinx Classes and the Sphinx Board of Governors invites all members of Sphinx and their families to our annual Alumni Weekend champagne brunch on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30am in the LGBT Center (3907 Spruce Street).

Come celebrate the graduation of the Sphinx ’12 class, the induction of the Sphinx ’13 class, and meet up with Sphinx alums from years’ past!

Additionally, this link (http://bit.ly/JfeXXp) is to the Sphinx Senior Society ad that will run on the back page of the Graduation/Goodbyes issue to be published by the Daily Pennsylvanian on May 11 and widely distributed on campus before and during 2012 graduation exercises on May 11-14.

2) Annual Sphinx Banquet Recap

This year’s banquet continued in the tradition of inducting an honorary Sphinx, welcoming the new inductees into Sphinx, and congratulating the outgoing class on their nearly completed undergraduate term. Over 15 alums came back to celebrate at The Orpheus Club in Center City with the full incoming and outgoing classes. In addition, Penn Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli (W’85) was welcomed as the 2012 Honorary Sphinx Inductee. We hope that all who couldn’t make this year’s banquet find a way to participate next year. It’s going to be a blast!

Pictures of the banquet are here: http://bit.ly/Jfh2Ts

 3) Sphinx Award Winners

Luis Ernesto Del Valle, C’12, W’12, receives a certificate and Sphinx figure as the first recipient of the Paul Miller Leadership Award. Presenting the award are Steve Klitzman, C’66 (left) and Greg Suss, C’75(right), members of the Sphinx Senior Society Board of Governors.

The Sphinx Senior Society Board of Governors established the Paul Miller Leadership Award in 2012 to honor the memory of the late Paul Miller, C’83. Despite suffering from dwarfism, Paul Miller excelled in both campus and public service leadership as a former Sphinx Society Scribe and Mask & Wig performer, graduate of Harvard Law School, and later as an author of the Americans with  Disabilities Act, and distinguished Commissioner  on the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, 1994-2004.

Ernesto received the Paul Miller Leadership Award at the Annual Spring Banquet for his outstanding campus and public service leadership as Co-Chair of the Wharton Council, member of the Advisory Board of the Dean of Admissions and the Penn Arts Pre-Orientation Program, founding high school teacher  of Penn’s Financial Literacy Community Project, and organizer of the first Wharton 5K race for charity to benefit the Jericho Project, a group dedicated to ending homelessness.

5) Sphinx LinkedIn Group

The Sphinx Board of Governors is trying to create an organized database of our over 1,800 alums. Please join the LinkedIn Group for Sphinx here: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=983817. This will help us better keep track of what our fabulous alumni community is up to and find new ways to expand the Sphinx experience beyond our time at Penn.

Input Welcome

If you have any alumni news items or suggestions for future Sphinx Newsletters, please email me at samirmm@alumni.upenn.edu

Sphinx Alumni – You are subscribed to this email list as a member of The Sphinx Senior Society. We subscribed alumni to this list based on information indicating who is a Sphinx in the Penn Development and Alumni Relations database.

We encourage you to join our Facebook and LinkedIn Groups – both named Sphinx Senior Society. These are closed groups and only open to members of Sphinx.

As the Penn database is not up to date, we ask you to share this information with your Sphinx classmates. If they did not receive this message, they should email Kiera Reilly, Sphinx ’93, member Sphinx Board of Governors. Kiera can code alumni in the Penn database and add members to this email list.
