In 1952, Sphinx elected two African-American students for the first time in history. The news was published in the New York Times, though the students were referred to as “negroes,” a common term in that period.

Robert A. Evans, captain-elect of the football team, and Edward Bell, star end, were Sphinx’s first African-American members.
